ABOUT THIS HOTEL
No Adults Triple Occupancy
Max 2 Adults + 1 Children
Hotel Villa Guamá is located in the Peninsula de Zapata National Park, in southern Matanzas province. The unusual design of this 2-star hotel resembles a reproduction of houses built by Cuba’s indigenous people.
Arriving at Villa Guamá is an adventure in itself: after boarding a motorized skiff, you travel 8 kilometers along a pretty estuary flanked by vegetation and frequented by birds. Upon reaching the mini-resort on Treasure Lake, the singular wood and palm structures, built over the lake, come into view.
This area is thick with legends: Laguna de Tesoro (‘Treasure Lake’) supposedly got its name after indigenous people here threw their worldly possessions into the lake as Spanish conquistadors readied to colonize the area in the 16th century. With a total area of 16km, this is the largest freshwater lake in Cuba. Boats leave every half hour for a sightseeing trip around the Laguna del Tesoro’s 10 islands.
The hotel complex can only be reached by boat, a 20 minute journey. The area is notable for its beautiful nature with many waterholes and mangrove forests. Villa Guamá is also a bird watching hotspot; guided tours can be arranged from the hotel. You can visit the crocodile farm in Guamá or take a boat trip on the lake and surrounding rivers.
The boat transfer to Guamá is not included and costs 5 CUC per person, each way (free for kids under 2 years old; prices subject to change).
